2014 had a lot of solid music come out of it. It also had a lot of bands making solid comebacks. From metal to hardcore to punk, this was a great year for the overall genre. Yes, in still churned out the shit, but let’s focus on some of the best this year had to offer!
10. Beartooth – Disgusting
Based on the rest of the list, this is the glaring “I don’t belong here,” but damned if I don’t mention it, I have spun this record so many times I lost count. Start to finish, it is metalcore done 100% right.
9. Eyehategod – Eyehategod
This was the year of the return, it’s been 14 years since they released anything, and what a triumphant return to the stage.
8. Fallujah – The Flesh Prevails
These technical deathcore guys deserve this recognition. Although everyone was in love with their first effort The Harvest Wombs (I wasn’t a fan), this album is amazing. Best in class, can’t wait to see more from these guys.
7. Aborted – The Necrotic Manifesto
Aborted really can’t stop producing quality death metal. Following up 2012’s Global Flatline, they are back and better than ever. Fast, heavy, brutal is all you need to worry about with this record.
6. At the Gates – At War With Reality
Year of the comeback, At the Gates hits us with their first studio album in 19 years. It was worth the wait. Although the album isn’t as technical sounding as say Slaughter of the Soul, the album is as tight as ever and I can’t wait for some more work from these pioneers.
5. Septicflesh – Titan
Septicflesh are back with another ruthless death metal album. The music is flawless, much like 2011’s The Great Mass. This album stands strong within their lineup of work. Fans of Septicflesh, this will not disappoint.
4. Revocation – Deathless
Every release this band gets better and better and Deathless might be their crowning moment. Start to finish this album hits hard, great technical work and flawless thrash at its finest. Metal Blade has a gem on there hands here.
3. Insomnium – Shadows Of The Dying Sun
This is the metal album of the year, without a doubt, just not my personal favorite so its moved up a few slots. The guitar work, drum work and vocals flow perfectly together. The ambiance of this record is amazing. One for Sorrow is something that was near impossible to follow up on, and they did it and hit it out of the park. If you are a melodic death/doom fan, this is your record of choice.
2. The Banner – Greying
When the Banner got back together a few years back I sat in the distance waiting for a release. It has been 6 year’s since Frailty and The Greying picks up right where that left off. Devastating hardcore punk music. The structuring I feel is a lot more like Each Breath Haunted, but regardless of your favorite Banner work, this is a must own.
1. Trap Them – Blissfucker
Trap Them produce album after album of sheer Bliss. The perfectly titled Blissfucker takes the stage in 2014 and is my favorite album of the year. Crusty, angry hardcore punk, this album is number 1.
