Drowning Pool, fan or not, is a band I’m sure nearly all listeners of metal are at least aware of because of ONE song. If you are not familiar with the chorus “LET THE BODIES HIT THE FLOOR”, then you must have been living under a rock. To this day, “Bodies” still receives a lot of play time on the radio and other forms of media. When Drowning Pool released their debut album Sinner in 2001, it was a fantastic album in its time. 2000-2001 is when the genre “nu-metal” really took off and you saw bands like Korn, Disturbed, Slipknot, Deftones, Papa Roach, etc. started either appearing or really start to receive attention (funny thing, all bands listed except for Korn cleared out of that genre rather fast).
Unfortunately, Dave Williams was found dead August 14, 2002, on Drowning Pool’s tour bus during their trek on that years Ozzfest. Williams had passed away to a disease of the heart muscle, known as Cardiomyopathy. To this day I am still grateful I was able to attend the Ozzfest here in MA to see Drowning Pool perform live with Williams just four weeks before he passed away. Especially considering fans of past and/or current Drowning Pool, old and young, can agree the band has never been the same since his passing. Since the death of Williams, Drowning Pool has released three more studio albums, Desensitized (2004), Full Circle (2007), and lastly Drowning Pool (2010). With four albums in their discography, they will soon announce their fourth vocalist. Williams fronted the band during Sinner, after his passing Jason Jones took over fronting duties. Jones soon left the band due to musical differences and was replaced with Ryan McCombs, who was the ex vocalist of the band Soil, who has now returned to Soil since his departure from Drowning Pool in November of 2011.
During this years Rock on the Range Festival, held May 18-20 at Columbus Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio, guitarist C.J. Pierce mentioned the band had found a new singer. Pierce chose not to reveal the identity of the new front man, but he did offer a hint, stating that his name began with the letter “J”. Well now things may have taken a turn for the worst, because we just might have our answer. It’s not set in stone, and no official statement has been made, but this is very compelling evidence. A number of online ticket vendors are now selling tickets for two separate shows that feature Drowning Pool with James Durbin. Yes, the 23 year old that was on last years American Idol pushing metal on the show by performing with such metal artists like Zack Wylde and Rob Halford on national television.
Really, this is for real, you can check it out for yourselves here, and also right here. Now I don’t really mind Durbin, I personally think he has fairly good vocals. I did enjoy him exposing the American Idol crowd to such Godly figures as Halford, but this just seems horrible. James Durbin performing vocals for Drowning Pool? Could you imagine Durbin performing vocals on their biggest hit, “Bodies“? If they were serious they might as well recruit this parrot, over six million views on Youtube in about a year and a half. That video is a huge hit, much larger than anything Drowning Pool has done in several years.
