Piracy Its a Crime

Musicians Against Piracy

I will preface this article with a simple disclaimer: Thrash Magazine does not support/condone or recommend illegally downloading music. Thrash Magazine is also not going to tell you how. But since crap like SOPA/PIPA is around, I feel the need to start articles about this topic like the above.

The metal community is a unique one, especially with bands that actually support piracy to grow. That being said, this is a planned document to list out artists that have spoken out against piracy to keep a running tally. This list will be broken out alphabetically by band, not by date said.

If you know of an artist with quotes and want to send it our way we will compile this list. Thrash Magazine supports these specific artists about the issues of piracy, we don’t necessarily support their specific views of it though.

Without delay, lets get this party started:

Kataklysm vocalist Maurizio Iacono:

This is just the beginning .. Not buying albums is affecting the labels who in return invest in the bands , tour support , recording .. its destroying all new comer bands and its making middle class musicians poor ,

your not hurting the labels by illegal downloading , your killing the bands .. starting a band these days is a suicide mission .. If music becomes a hobby for musicians , then no more tours , no more good music ..dark times ahead .. well wait we have Holograms now , don’t need REAL people on stage..my bad ..”

“PART 2 of my rant in response to others who say labels should die : its not true that bands don’t need labels.. ask a 16 year old kid who just started a band what to do?.. the power of record labels to fly journalists, to MARKET , to Distribute is SUPER important , with time you get the knowledge to do a lot of things but to run a business ( yes running band is business) + touring world wide to please fans that want to see you ..is nearly impossible , you need labels even if they become more of a management thing in the future , you need them ..right now with record sales getting lower and people buying less and less product ..labels are saying sure, well buy your flights , well promote the band , well give you tour support to buy evan or rent..

BUT give us your merch , after you do that.. you STARVE to death .. Again its not about me , I had a great 20 years , if it ends tomorrow i can keep my head help up high for what I’ve done.. but what about the new comers..and the future of music.. NOT good , its not you the fans fault , don’t get me wrong its the system that let it happen , governments etc could of stopped it..they didn’t .. now it sup to us the fans to help out, buy a shirt , cd, vinyls, download on iTunes, amazon.. the songs you like .. DO SOMETHING ! hehe..

I love you all and always remember.. you guys have all the power to build or destroy , we are only messengers of your voice .. get on the M.A.P. Musicians Against Piracy Tommy Jones documentary should happen to shed light on what is really happening on the streets

Lamb of God vocalist Randy Blythe:

While on the topic of down loading leaks, aside from the fact that it has killed record sales (well, that & music industry GREED), the FACT OF THE MATTER IS- leaked stuff off the Internet DOES NOT HAVE THE SOUND QUALITY OF A RECORD/CD. Musicians, engineers, producers, masterers-we all put in A LOT of time trying to get a record to sound AS KICK-ASS as possible.

Then it gets dumped on the Internet, leaked through a million different sites, some of which compromise the quality exponentially- a record gets FUCKED UP. I LOVE my iPod, but listening to a cd always seems to sound better to me. Why? Crappy bit rate encoding, ect. Call me a nerd, but I wanna hear what THE BAND wants me to hear.

Jesus Christ. I tried to go into just the music QUALITY aspect of buying vs downloading & now it’s the whole ethics/financial aspect AGAIN. So, I didn’t want to do this, AGAIN, but I will. I’m sure what I’m about to post will PISS OFF a lot of people, BUT I DON’T FUCKING CARE. Y’all can get mad, call me a rock star, tell me I’m a greedy fuck, a sell out, a money grubbing child rapist who lives only to destroy music. You can EVEN call me Lars Ulrich. I think he’s kinda cute for a short, balding, Danish man. IT WON’T BOTHER ME. SO FIRE AWAY. I WILL LAUGH.

What I am about to say is the cold, naked, HARD TRUTH: illegally downloading music is STEALING. YES, I SAID IT. And AS SUCH, it is UNETHICAL. If it wasn’t STEALING, then it would just be called “down loading”, NOT “ILLEGALLY downloading”. WHY this is such a HARD CONCEPT to grasp? Let’s put it this way- I work for McDonalds. My job is to make burgers. McDonalds (a giant, evil corporation) has to pay for the labor (me) to assemble their product (burgers). I don’t sit around & make burgers all day for free. People LOVE burgers. Burgers SHOULD indeed be free!

BUT- it COSTS $ to make burgers. And the burgers WERE over priced for a long time- old Ronald had gotten greedy. He was RICH AS FUCK in fact. But despite the fact that Ron was rich from over priced burgers, me & the rest of the burger cooks (not to mention the janitor, the cashier, the manager, the delivery truck drivers, & whoever else) could STILL make a decent living IF WE WERE GOOD AT OUR JOBS working at McDonalds.

Then, one day, someone gets a key to the backdoor of McD’s & it goes STRAIGHT to the kitchen. He SNEAKS IN LIKE ALL GOOD THIEVES DO, and he starts eating all the burgers he wants, FOR FREE. Then he makes a key for his buddy, who makes one for his pal who makes one for his pal ect. Soon everybody has a key & it’s a fucking burger bonanza. The burgers WERE overpriced, right? And Ronald & A FEW of his cooks were just rich money grubbing assholes anyway, right? SO FUCK ‘EM! EAT AWAY! So that goes on a while then good old Ronald looks at his checkbook- WTF?!?!?

Suddenly things aren’t looking so peachy for Ronald. So he starts firing motherfuckers left & right, & a TON of McDonalds close down. BUT… PEOPLE STILL WANT BURGERS, right? Ronald starts trying all sortsa shit to keep McD’s open- marketing schemes, different wrappers for the burgers, burger TASTINGS- but NOTHING is working. WHY? LITERALLY MILLIONS of people have a key to McDonald’s & are GORGING THEMSELVES 4 FREE

Some of the cooks open their own burger joints because McDs is failing. They charge fair prices & do I ALL themselves. They fail too- WHY? FREE BURGERS STILL. Only a few pay for the burgers. Hell, a WHOLE GENERATION of burger eaters grow up NEVER HAVING BOUGHT A SINGLE BURGER.

Finally, the whole burger business is FUCKED UP. Me, I’m an older burger cook who manages save up some $ from the old days, & a lot of folks will still pay for me to whip up a burger for em. But the young guys who have dreams of being a successful burger cook? FORGET IT. ITS ALL BECAUSE the key that opens McD’s opens ALL burger joints. So all the Indy burger shops go down too- WHY? BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE WALKING OUT WITH FREE NOW. Burgers should be free, RIGHT? I WANT MY BURGER I WANT MY BURGER I WANT MY BURGER- FUCK Ronald & FUCK his cooks- I’m TAKING EM!

Eventually it all goes up in flames. Fuck it. I got my burger. I TOOK IT. And when I, as a burger cook complain about people KILLING THE BURGER BUSINESS by stealing from McDonalds? I’m called A GREEDY ASSHOLE. Burgers SHOULD be free. BUT THEY ARE NOT FREE TO MAKE. Neither is music. Like it or not, there IS NO MORAL GRAY AREA HERE. STOP STEALING.

It’s ASTOUNDING to me that I have to actually debate the ethics of taking something that’s FOR SALE & just NOT paying for it. Wow. Just WOW.

Norma Jean vocalist Cory Brandan:

Anyone that has ever downloaded a NJ record. You owe me money. I hope you had enough money today to buy your family groceries. I mean “for free” of course. Ya know… illegally. Stolen. Theft. Don’t get your feeling hurt. It’s ok if you steal from me. Anything else I can do for free for you? Spoiled brats! It’s about time someone got pissed about this! I hope you guys know what it feels like to have thousands of dollars stolen from you only to be told you have a an attitude about it. BTW! I appreciate and LOVE all of you that have supported us over the years. I hope you are all blessed!

Trivium vocalist/guitarist Matt Heafy:

Via Twitter, following the news that Warner Bros. was closing all Roadrunner offices outside of the US, he took to the popular tool and posted the following:

1. and the real fact of the matter is that I am pissed off at my GREEDY record abel for canning my friends who helped build our band…
2. Regardless of your stance. We all work for a living. I do what I do to pay RENT. If I wanted millions, I’d be in pop music…
3. @MaxDemian3 in other places of the world where our music isn’t available – I support it. But places where it is- free work isn’t right…
4. The real issue aside from whatever caused it is that in an industry NEEDING loyal people – higerh-ups in their cushy desks wrote them off…
5. Wanna defend piracy? Do what you do for me and 10,000 others for free. Whatever your trade is – give me that for free or You’re a jerk…
6. But our friends who are being tossed away so quickly by the label are now out of jobs. These people helped bands get where they are today…
7. I don’t know if it’s corporate greed or it’s due to the fact that no one puts value in physical art and that piracy created a domino effect.
8. I wish I knew who or what to blame specifically, and chew off it’s heads – but Roadrunner records just fired some of their best employees
