Dirge Within

The name of the band Dirge Within, is interesting to say the least and sounds as if there is a story behind it. Where did the name come from and what is the story?

The name Dirge i felt was dark and fit the music i was writing at first then we added Within for legal reasons but now i it seems fine too me.the bands music is heavy and dark ala DIRGE

Your lyrics are infused with heavy detail and raw emotion. What is it that normally gives you inspiration when writing lyrics and is there a concept behind the writing of Force Fed Lies?

Jerms is the main lyricist so i think he really wanted to capture a realistic vibe.were not into writing songs people cant relate too.a song like Self Medicate deals with ones abuse or a song like Stain Of Humanity is about rape.

You just released Force Fed Lies, how has the reactions been thus far?

We’re thrilled with the reviews and comments from all the new fans.i feel we made an album that is true and heavy without sounding like 20 other acts.too many bands these days just try to rip off others sounds we went for what is Our but stayed fresh and modern.

What can fans expect when they pick up a copy?

A full on metal assault.shredding solos, thick grooves thunderous drums and massive hooks,FUCKIN METAL!

When it came to releasing Force Fed Lies how did that whole package come together?

I sat down w/stephen jenses of f3 studios once we had the album recorded and we picked the song FORCE FED LIES as the title which too me had many meanings.i think the cover art is strong and shows a part of what is going on in our world these days.

What was the recording process like, how long did you have, was their any pressure on you?

We did the music for the album in wisconsin w/ chris wisco @ belle city sound then once we had all the music done JERMS worked @ edsel Dope’s studio in chicago,il to record all the vocals.it was a really smooth experience and we sent it off to the uk and had jeff and ginge do the mixing on they’re known for a lot of there work with bullet for my valentine.

Who did the artwork and title for the album, when you look on the final project, is there anything you wish you could have done differently?

Stephen Jensen from F3 Studios did the new logo and album art.the concept was mine from the lyrics of the song that Jerms wrote.i’am 100 % happy with the final version!

Many of your songs are so hard and intense that I am sure they translate well into a live setting taking on a whole new life in front of a live audience. How does it make you feel when the emotion and power that you envisioned in the recording studio, come to life while playing in front of a crowd?

Thank you very true, the tour we’re on now in the u.s really has shown us which songs translate for the live show, one of the most intense songs in our set lately has been AS I WALK.the pits that song conjurs up are amazing.i think all of our songs work live well.one thing is we can adjust our set lists according too who were on the road with.variety is key

Different groups have unique ways of writing their songs. How do you guys go about writing your music?

The music is first.i will have a riff sit down with the drummer and we go from there.once we finish it up then Jerms throws his twist on it and 90 % of the time it is effortless.

Is it a collective effort or is it more the efforts of one particular member of the band?

On the debut i wrote all the music.each guy contributes there parts

What are the upcoming plans for Dirge Within?

We are just wrapping up a 2 month north american tour w/TRIVIUM then off for jan then we will be back on the road in the new year so check our site for any news on the bands etc.

How has MYSPACE and the internet impacted your band and do you think downloading helps or hinders the artists?

Myspace etc etc has helped all.it is great for people to discover new bands on there.our demo online helped us a lot before we were on E1.i think downloading is horrible.no bands will benefit from it.sad but true

What is the toughest lesson you ever learned in the studio and on the stage?

just be yourself i think bands who try and emulate others sounds etc get lost.do what is you.

What bands would you like to tour with and who has been your favorite to tour with this far? Any particular reason?

i would love a slayer tour or fear factory now that they are back on track.my fave tour has been the one were on now.trivium are total metal brothers.great band and people.

Describe Dirge Within in three words.

Heavy Fuckin Metal !

If you had a chance to go back in time, where, what, and why?

The 70’s would be cool haha seeing the doors or jimi hendrix live would be rad. a care free world that wasn’t so hatefilled and jaded.

How do you think the recession is affecting musicians like yourself? Is it at all?

It hurts all i see it everyday. less and less bands can afford to tour or draw kids to the shows. that is sad

Every band has its musical influences. What are some of the other bands and artists that have greatly influenced you guys and your music?

I love a lot of the classics like slayer, pantera, voi vod, king diamond. the classics, strong melodic metal is my roots for sure

All of that passion that you play with must be tough on you physically. How do you prepare for the physical demands of a tour?

A lot of stretching is key before the show and try not too eat shitty late nite on the road.

Anything else you’d like to add?

Check out the debut i think anyone who is a fan of metal will find it refreshing!
