Obituary with John Tardy

Your lyrics are infused with heavy detail and raw emotion. What is it that normally gives you inspiration when writing lyrics and is there a concept behind the writing of Darkest Day?

NO, not really.  I just like to get into each song and go with the way it makes me feel.  With Tardy Brothers I was able to get away with a little different style but with OB is has to say somewhat morbid and angry but never too serious.

You just released Darkest Day, how has the reactions been thus far? What can fans expect when they pick up a copy?

The reaction has been great from everyone!  We are really happy with it and i think our fans will hear what a good time we had doing this CD.  I think it is the best CD we have ever done!

When it came to releasing Darkest Day how did that whole package come together?

Packaging…I guess it started when we were dicussing ideas with Andreas Marschal, our long time artist.  We had some ideas and he went with it and came up with a great scene!  we want to use our creature and put it in battle with the new “Executioner”!!!!

What was the recording process like, how long did you have, was their any pressure on you?

This is where it gets fun.  For E.R. we built our own studio.  We then recorded our TB Bloodline CD and have been learning and lot about doing our own recording.  This CD is seems like it has all come together and we are really happy with the sounds we are getting.  I am actually have fun doing some other bands in the area too.  we have done so much in the last couple of years that we really did not have time to have too much preasure on us.  That is actually never a problem anyway!  We are going to do what we want and when we want to do it!

Who did the artwork and title for the new album, when you look on the final project, is there anything you wish you could have done differently?

I like…and I think Darkest Day is a pretty cool title!

Many of your songs are so hard and intense that I am sure they translate well into a live setting taking on a whole new life in front of a live audience. How does it make you feel when the emotion and power that you envisioned in the recording studio, come to life while playing in front of a crowd?

This music / band are built to play live!  It just comes across better when performed live.  If someone say they don’t like us all I ask is that you see it live and then make you decision!

Different groups have unique ways of writing their songs. How do you guys go about writing your music? Is it a collective effort or is it more the efforts of one particular member of the band?

Donald, Trevor and I write all the songs.  We just like to hang out and jam.  It is never a well thought out process or never over thought, that is for sure.  We do not take ourself to series and I think that is what makes it so fun for us.  Once again, having your own studio makes such a difference in what we do it is hard to explain!

What are the upcoming plans for Obituary?

We leave next week for europe.  We have a handful of summer festivals in July.  Portugal in August and then Sept-Oct in the U.S.  We have some S. America / Mexico / Australia / Japan stuff sometime after that ( not comfirmed) and then hope to get back to europe at the end of the year or early next year.

How has MYSPACE and the internet impacted your band and do you think downloading helps or hinders the artists? How have you seen it impact you since you started before the internet was a useful tool for bands.

The amount of direct comtact we have with our fans through our website is awesome!  people can email me anytime though our website.  I run our website and keep that all up to date.  I do not use the myspace thing myself but we do have a myspace page.  illegal downloading and sharing of our music has definately hurt us and the industry.  Despite larger shows than ever we sell only a fraction of the CD we used to and it really hurts.  I makes us raise ticket and merch prices just to make thing work.

What is the toughest lesson you ever learned in the studio and on the stage?

In the studio, the better you know the music and what you want to do will make you life much easier.  On stage, make sure you know when the stage ends… aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What bands would you like to tour with and who has been your favorite to tour with this far? Any particular reason?

We have been lucky to play with so many good bands over the years it is hard to say!  Right now I am trying to set up a Florida Death Metal Tour with us, Canibal, 6 Feet and Deicide…I think that would be awesome!

Ralph is a current and great member of Obituary as lead, does his full time addition mean the end of Allen West in the band? I know Allen has gone on hiatus a few times, this seemingly the longest so I figured I would check in on an update.

It is hard to say. right now Ralph is working out good for us and we have had so many problems with Allen it is just hard to think backwards!  I have not spoke to allen lately, so I am not sure how he is doing!

When can fans expect Live Xecution in Bad Berka 2008?

Should be out by the end of the year.  keep and eye on the website and I will let you know asap!

How do you think the recession is affecting musicians like yourself? Is it at all?

Sure it does.  If fans don’t have a lot of money to spend then it definately affects our tours and how many shows we can do!

Every band has its musical influences. What are some of the other bands and artists that have greatly influenced you guys and your music?

Early, Early on, the guys in our neighborhood from Savatage and Nasty savage we a big influence on us.  we later started listening to Venom, Slayer and Frost that really pushed us in the direction we wanted to go!

All of that passion that you play with must be tough on you physically. How do you prepare for the physical demands of a tour?

It is a lot of work for sure.  Running, biking and slow up just a little on the drinking are all important to get myself ready!

Anything else you’d like to add?

We thank everyone for all the support and really hope you enjoy both the new TB Bloodline and OB Darkest Day!!!!!!!!!…see you out on the road!!!!jt
