Attack! Attack! UK

The name of the band Attack! Attack! UK, is interesting to say the least and sounds as if there is a story behind it. Where did the name come from and what is the story?

The  name everywhere in the world except the US is Attack! Attack! but because there was an American band call Attack Attack we decided to avoid confusion in the US to add the UK part . The name was actually thought of by a friend of ours and we loved it , we checked myspace and there wasn’t anyone else called it at that time so we decided to go with it 😀

Your lyrics are infused with heavy detail and raw emotion. What is it that normally gives you inspiration when writing lyrics and is there a concept behind the writing of your s/t?

There’s no concept as such for the album but there are songs that do describe the same thing. We have all been in previous other bands before this one and tried very hard to succeed in the music industry with those bands , I guess the frustration of the music industry has influenced some of our songs. We can get inspiration from anywhere, one of the songs was written about LA and how fake it is, we wrote those lyrics whilst recording the album

You just released your s/t, how has the reactions been thus far? What can fans expect when they pick up a copy?

We have been over the moon with the positive praise we received from the media and from fans . We love hearing feedback from fans about how the album has inspired them and we especially love hearing fans singing the music back to us at live shows. I guess fans can expect to feel like their money was well spent 😉   its melodic rock music , straight up , no frills , all killer no filler :p

When it came to releasing your s/t how did that whole package come together? What was the recording process like, how long did you have, was their any pressure on you?

It was all a bit of a blur to be honest. I have been friends with Stuart from a band called lostprophets for many many years and we were having a beer one day and talking about the new band attack attack. At this point we had only been together as a band for a few months . Stuart said “i want you to come to LA and record your album with me” . Obviously this was very appealing to us but we only had 6 songs written, we had no label or financial backing. After thinking about it we decided that you only live once and that we would put all our money together get into crazy credit card debt and fly to LA to record. It all happened so fast, we had 3 weeks to write the album then 17 days to record it once we got to LA. I guess looking back there was immense pressure (the debt, the lack of song writing time, the lack of recording time) but at the time of doing it we didn’t feel any pressure at all. We had the times of our lives! Getting signed was pretty easy for us, Stuart played the album to a friend of his/ours who works at Rock Ridge Music. She loved it and the rest is history

Who did the artwork and title for the album, when you look on the final project, is there anything you wish you could have done differently?

A friend of ours did the artwork. We had a very clear vision that we wanted it to be simple and bold but effective. That was our aim. The only thing we might change now is to have included the lyrics in the sleeve

Many of your songs are so hard and intense that I am sure they translate well into a live setting taking on a whole new life in front of a live audience. How does it make you feel when the emotion and power that you envisioned in the recording studio, come to life while playing in front of a crowd?

Its amazing, i think most people who have seen us live would agree that the songs do have a new lease of life on the live stage. There is no better feeling than the feeling you get when you hear a crowd singing your songs , its amazing!

Different groups have unique ways of writing their songs. How do you guys go about writing your music? Is it a collective effort or is it more the efforts of one particular member of the band?

We have no set methods, everyone in this band can play guitar , everyone can also sing so its a great advantage because anyone of us  can write the songs . We have written songs as individuals and as a collective , i think the best songs just come when you least expect them , if you try formula’s in my experience it is less successful

What are the upcoming plans for Attack! Attack! UK?

We are on the next Guitar hero, that’s massive exposure for us. There will be a UK and European mainland tour , we will be on the road until late November. After that we go into the studio to write more songs and hopefully record some new stuff

How has MYSPACE and the internet impacted your band and do you think downloading helps or hinders the artists?

Myspace was essential for us, before we had even played shows we had fans all over the world who had heard our demos on the internet. Its  a massive help to bands. Personally I think downloading is fine as long as those people if they like the music come out to live shows and support the band that way

What bands would you like to tour with and who has been your favorite to tour with this far? Any particular reason?

We would love to tour with the foo fighters or jimmy eat world , they are 2 of our favorite bands. Favorite dates so far were the reading and leeds festivals in the UK. Simply because they were our biggest shows and the crowd response was awesome. Its a festival we had been to for many years as fans of music and always wanted to play.

Describe Attack! Attack! UK in three words.

Rock and roll

If you had a chance to go back in time, where, what, and why?

1990, seattle , Nirvana and watching them on a small stage

How do you think the recession is affecting musicians like yourself? Is it at all?

We haven’t really seen much of an impact personally but I guess it is affecting album sales / tour turnouts etc so fingers crossed it picks up soon!

Every band has its musical influences. What are some of the other bands and artists that have greatly influenced you guys and your music?

Foo fighters , Pearl Jam , The Police , Jimmy eat world, Kings of Leon, Michael Jackson, Prince , Faith no more . We have a very broad musical taste so there are no limits for us for inspiration

All of that passion that you play with must be tough on you physically. How do you prepare for the physical demands of a tour?

Plenty of visits to the gym , eating healthy , they are the ideals . In reality we try to do these things but often we don’t get round to it 🙁

Anything else you’d like to add?

Please check us out at http://myspace.com/attackattackband, you can get our CD from FYE and coconut in the US . Hope to see you state side in 2010!
