Job For A Cowboy’s first full length on Metal Blade records is like a straight shot of heroine would be to the brain. This is fast brutal music that does not stop. ‘Genesis’ steps in at 10 tracks and about 30 minutes and it doesn’t stop.
Job For A Cowboy’s previous EP, ‘Doom’, was a short look at perfecting the death metal scene. ‘Genesis’ is the full example of the beauty of what can happen when a band spends time on a death metal record. This is not saying bands like Cannibal Corpse, Vehemence, Cattle Decapitation, and so forth are not doing what they should; but there is a lot of mud out there in the death world and Job For A Cowboy is turning that mud into shit that they are stomping all over.
Musically this band is a step above the competition with guitar solos, hard hitting riffs, blast beats on the drums, and so forth. This album is 30 minutes of ear bliss (if you can call death metal ear bliss). Guitarists Bobby and Ravi sure know how to be completely brutal and yet very technical. Jon “The Charn” Rice is a blast beat god on the drums as well.
However, where Job For A Cowboy truly stands out from the rest of the death metal world is in vocalist Jonny Davy. His growls are punishing, his shrieks are terrifying, and his grunts are mentally disturbing. On tracks like “Reduced To Mere Filth” and “Upheaval” he truly shows off his vocal abilities.
Production is also up on this release. ‘Genesis’ is a true form of death metal for the masses and they are definitely growing quick. Job For A Cowboy is a must own, and hopefully will be with us for a long time to come. ‘Genesis’ could very well be an album of the year.
